Buyer's Guide. But for those in need of practical transportation who like to wear Pilotis for the daily commute, the Mazda 3 remains one of the best small cars on the market. This author netted miles on a trek to Virginia International Raceway and back.

There, the 3 served as an excellent support vehicle for our annual Lightning Lap speedfest. The car still impresses with its drivability and solid packaging. The miles have exposed a couple of other complaints that, until now, were small annoyances. What feel the clutch may once have had has faded with use, making it difficult to zero in on the pickup point and resulting in jerky, overrevved launches.

A new Mazda 3 on hand recently for our annual 10Best gala supported this observation. We previously had the driver-seat track replaced under warranty because it would no longer adjust up or down, but the seat now sticks occasionally when adjusting it fore-and-aft. Mazda also replaced the entire center-console lid, because the plastic latch had broken off and it could only be ordered as a part of the entire assembly. The 3 has been a little finicky since we last reported on it, but our enthusiasm has dampened little for an otherwise solid, fun-driving, and practical car.

With the car taking nine months to hit the 20,mile mark, however, our Mazda is behind schedule; we typically like to wrap up a full, 40,mile test in about a year. The ride quality over expansion joints is supple, downshifting via the slick six-speed shifter makes routine passing maneuvers feel heroic, the seats are supportive, and the ergonomics easy to live with. Combine all that with a consistently playful demeanor on surface streets, and you have a recipe for serious logbook fawning.

Fun behind the wheel often comes at the price of hefty fuel bills and servicing costs. But here, too, our Mazda 3 has impressed, with overall fuel economy actually improving a tick to 25 mpg.

The Mazda3's crisp, responsive handling and standard anti-lock brakes go a long way toward avoiding a crash. Six standard airbags, active head restraints, and carefully engineered crush zones help you survive an accident when the handling can't help you avoid it. Optional dynamic stability control and traction control are standard on higher-end models of the Mazda Mazda3 but not offered on base versions, an important omission to note if you're purchasing this car for young adults or first-time drivers.

The Mazda3 continues this trend with first-in-class bi-xenon adaptive lighting standard on the Grand Touring model. A three-position memory function has been added to cars equipped with power seats—another first for the segment and not offered on any competitor's compact car.

A navigation system is available, but it's a frustrating exercise to program with steering-wheel-mounted buttons; there's no touch controls on screen at all, and no way for the passenger to input destinations.

Other available features include a Bose speaker premium surround sound system, Bluetooth connectivity for cell phones and portable media players, a dock for iPods, and Sirius Satellite Radio. An advanced keyless entry system includes push-button engine starting. The Mazda3 options list also includes rain-sensing wipers, a sunroof, leather upholstery, and heated seats and side mirrors.

The completely restyled Mazda Mazda3 definitely makes a statement, and while most reviews read by TheCarConnection. The Mazda3 is an affordable compact from Mazda that is available as a "four-door sedan and four-door hatchback a so-called five-door ," according to USA Today.

The Mazda3 boasts a completely new look compared to its predecessor, but Car and Driver says that the "various Mazda traits make the sedan immediately recognizable as a Mazda3. Although there is some dissent regarding the new exterior of the Mazda Mazda3, the interior draws high praise in nearly every review read by TheCarConnection. The Mazda3 will arrive on U. The Mazda Mazda3 is available with one of two engines, according to reviews read by TheCarConnection. AutoWeek notes that the Mazda3 gets an optional "2.

Both engines provide plenty of pep, with USA Today calling the 2. The available transmissions for the Mazda3 also rate highly with reviewers, particularly the manual offerings.

Among the available transmissions, Car and Driver reports that "a slick-shifting five-speed manual is standard with the 2. Compact cars typically feature high fuel economy as a major selling point, and while Mazda would like to market the Mazda Mazda3 as a class standout, it falls short in some versions.

According to Cars. Speaking of a fun driving experience, the Mazda3 offers it in spades. AutoWeek reviewers agree, raving about the "direct and linear steering feel, rigid chassis and well-sorted suspension.
